I was reading a great article on entrepreneurship competitions and thought wouldn’t it be awesome to build a comprehensive list that evolves over time of the best business plan competitions? We can even have an archive of some of the classic competitions that had interesting results. So with that being said I will create a google survey for the top business plan competitions and publish the results here.

I need your help! Please add details of the business plan competitions you have found or attended. I’m including a link to a Google survey below that will allow you to help me create a business competition resource for college students and recent graduates. Anyone is welcome to use this resource, let’s also try to include larger competitions that encompass events outside of college as well.

My Hofstra University Startup Story

I was a student at Hofstra University from 2010 to 2012. My classmates and I had a unique opportunity after the fall of the US economy in 2008 to help build an entrepreneurship club from the ground up. Since the global economic recovery did not really start to take shape until sometime in 2011 we had many people show interest in making a startup club. We called it the Hofstra University Startups Club. We founded the club in 2012 (via the student center) with the intent of combining talent from across campus to help produce cool new projects and startups. Here is a link to our original club opening presentation and it’s plenty rough but our members loved it.

At the inception of the club, we knew we wanted to try new things as a group. We opted to enter a NY State Business plan competition (which is now run by the Capital Foundation). We pitched this concept, it went over better than we expected but the trip itself was awesome. I remember sleeping on the floor of one of our team member’s residences in upstate NY the night before we were to pitch a the competition at the State University Of Albany in Upstate NY. The drive was scenic too. We did not win, but the experience left us inspired and we went on to each take our own startup path to achieve our own entrepreneurship goals.

As proof that students can help make an influential change in the college world, Hofstra University has it’s own Entrepreneurship Center and IdeaHub only a few years after the start of HUSU. I greatly look forward to seeing what the center will accomplish alongside the student-run club.

Notes:

Hofstra University Startups was founded on February 7, 2012. Our first Constitution can be found here.
